Copper Sulfide
Copper sulfide is a mineral composed of two components, represented by the general formula CuxSy. This compound is found in both synthetic materials and natural minerals, specifically as CuS (covellite) and Cu2S (chalcocite). Copper monosulfide (CuS) is a chemical compound consisting of copper and sulfur, naturally occurring as the dark indigo blue mineral covellite. It crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system, which is the structure of covellite used in semiconductors and photo-optical applications. Copper sulfide exhibits excellent metallic properties and can become a superconductor at approximately 1.6 K. It has diverse applications, including use in photocatalysts, solar cells, sensors, and as a cathode material in rechargeable lithium batteries. Additionally, this material is utilized in the automotive industry for the production of metal brake pads.
